Using your stove safely

In short

Always flue the stove properly through the flashing kit and keep the tent ventilated. Never leave it unattended, and put it out before you go to sleep. We recommend using a CO alarm at all times when the stove is in use.

Carbon monoxide alarms

CO alarms are a helpful addition and we recommend that one is used at all times when using the stove. However, please note that performance can be unreliable when used in outdoor environments, so you should also make sure there is adequate ventilation at all times and that the flue of the stove is clean and clear of obstruction. Always use the stove in accordance with the safety instructions supplied with it.

Every time you use it

  • Cure a new painted stove outdoors first with a few small fires, building up gradually.
  • Stand the stove on something to stop ash damaging your matting or groundsheet. It doesn't have to be solid; a mat or towel works.
  • Keep some half-moon vents open if the doors are closed.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and put it out fully before sleeping.
  • Only use an open-lid BBQ function outside the tent.
  • Supervise children and pets; the stove, base and flue all get very hot.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and heat-proof glove to hand.

In wind

Take the flue down in strong winds, and don't light the stove if the canvas is moving significantly.
